Over the last two decades, the Rural Development Institute–HIHT, Swami Rama Himalayan University, has developed extensive institutional experience in designing and implementing First Responder, First Aid, and CPR capacity-building programs. Since 2006, the organization has systematically delivered more than 200 structured trainings across Uttarakhand and adjoining regions, addressing community-based first aid, CPR, disaster response, road safety, and psychological first aid. This long-term engagement reflects the organization’s sustained commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness at the community and institutional levels.

In terms of scale and outreach, the organization has directly trained over 20,000 individuals from diverse demographic and professional backgrounds. A significant proportion of this outreach has been through large school- and college-based programs, particularly during 2022, when several single-day trainings engaged 300 to 600 students and teachers per session. Adolescents and youth constitute the largest beneficiary group, demonstrating the organization’s strategic focus on building a cadre of young first responders within schools, families, and communities.

First Responder and CPR training has remained the core thematic area of work, accounting for approximately 70–75% of all programs implemented. These trainings, typically ranging from 120 to 300 minutes, have been delivered through both offline and online modes to ensure reach and inclusivity. Over the years, RDI–HIHT has worked with a wide spectrum of participants, including students, teachers, police personnel, army cadets, drivers and conductors, ASHAs, AWWs, PRI members, persons with disabilities, and community volunteers. The organization’s experiential, hands-on training methodology has consistently emphasized practical skills, scenario-based learning, and confidence building for real-life emergency response.

During the recent period of 2023–2025, the organization’s work reflects further consolidation and professionalization. In these three years alone, more than 15 focused trainings were conducted, benefiting approximately 1200 participants. These included specialized CPR and First Aid programs for police personnel, railway officials, army cadets, senior pediatricians, scholarship students, and senior secondary school students. Trainings conducted at high-risk and high-footfall locations—such as Rishikesh Railway Station, IMA/IAP Roorkee, RIMC Dehradun, and police institutions—demonstrate the organization’s ability to strategically target frontline settings where rapid response is critical to saving lives.

Geographically, RDI–HIHT has implemented First Aid and First Responder trainings across more than 100 locations, spanning districts such as Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, and Chamoli, along with selected sites outside Uttarakhand. Programs have been delivered by multidisciplinary teams of experienced medical professionals and certified trainers, with 1 to 6 resource persons engaged per training to maintain quality facilitation, even for large participant groups.

Overall, the organization’s experience reflects strong continuity and institutional learning. From early wilderness first responder and disaster management trainings during 2006–2014, to the integration of Psychological First Aid and Community Managed Disaster Management in 2015, and the current emphasis on CPR and frontline first responder preparedness, RDI–HIHT has continuously evolved its approach while remaining community-centered. This cumulative experience positions the organization as a credible and seasoned implementing agency in First Aid and emergency response capacity building, contributing significantly to safer institutions and more resilient communities.
